Project CAMINOs is a program that focuses on helping prospective students and their families through their journey into college. I was brought on board as a Visual Communication Design Student Assistant during October 2020. During this time, we were providing workshops and aid completely virtual.
It was important to begin creating a brand for the program to spread through our social media, Zoom workshops, and additional resources. Camino means path in Spanish, which is relevant to Project CAMINO’s objective. When drafting the logo concepts the idea of a path and guidance was kept in mind.

Logo Drafts
Concept Development
Early drafts of the logo had similar themes consisting of a path leading to a point. I wanted to communicate the journey to Cal Poly Pomona, and how Project CAMINOs could do that for a student. However, the building that Cal Poly Pomona is known for, the CLA, is being demolished. A new location had to replace that signature building. The union plaza, which used to be stables, and is one of the original buildings of the campus, are featured repeatedly in these drafts.

Working closely with the Senior Coordinator we were able to narrow down options. To pay homage to the Union Plaza’s original purpose, as stables, the Coordinator suggested the horseshoe. Feedback was communicated and applied during this stage, like making the horseshoe circular, and trying different campus locations.
